Swift donates used water bottles to YMCA

A very happy YMCA youth program director poses with bags and boxes of clean, used water bottles left over from the Hugo Road Race, which took place May 31, 2008. Six to seven hundred bottles have been re-used from both Deer Trail and Hugo this year. All part of making Swift an environmentally friendly bike club. We also buy carbon credits to offset the greenhouse gases emitted by offering our bike races, and do Adopt-a-Road cleanup of Nelson Road between 51st and 63rd.

Hill Climb ride - Thursday, 5:30, Vics 30th

Vics 30th, 5:30, Thursday, climbing ride - Lee Hill to Deer Trail and return

I am going to ride Lee Hill to the top, and continue on up the Deer Trail road to the end of the pavement.  Lee Hill is moderate, but Deer Trail appears to be a bit steeper.  I have never ridden Deer Trail, so it might be a bit of an adventure.  We can re-group at the top of the Lee Hill climbs and at the top of Deer Trail.  Return will be retracing Lee Hill back home.

Estes Park Trip

Great trip up to Estes Park! Jenny drove the 3 cylinder sag wagon filled to the brim. Mindi got the prize for most stuff, David Coombs for ...nothing..except the Swift Cycling Cake! The crew was pretty exhausted from the ride up to Estes and then had to crawl up a loooong, steeeeep hill to the cabin. I think Jeff's face says it all. Had a delicious spaghetti dinner on Friday night (sauce made in a pressure cooker...it was so good). French toast for breakfast....Jenny did a solo ride in the park while the others did their killer ride down to Lyons and back. Lots of kids showed up on Sunday to close out a great weekend. Let's do it again soon!

Tuesday HC - Top of Flagstaff Mountain

Hard charging assault on Super Flagstaff

Al, Stephen, Jenny, and I made the assault on Flagstaff last night. After a warm-up tour of the well-heeled neighborhoods of upper Chautauqua, the climb started in earnest. Jenny kept a reasonable pace, while the rest of us took off like mountain goats on amphetamines, with heart rates near unsustainable levels. In a wise move, Al, with two weekend rides under his belt, turned around at the amphitheater road, while the two Stephen's soldiered on. We made it to the top under gray and threatening skies, with Stephen digging deep after two (2!) time trials on Sunday and a commute to work on Tuesday. Someplace on the interwebs, there is a camera picture of Stephen H. at the top, taken while muttering that "...I won't be up here again for awhile..."

Nice temps, great views of the Indian Peaks still deep in snow (if you could bear to take in the vistas under the heavy suffering imposed by the upper Flagstaff sections) and a welcome change from the summer Flagstaff ride heat where the asphalt is melting and one is drenched with sweat. I am thinking that a Super Walker ride is in order soon - get out your knobbies...

Steve

It's not all about riding...just mostly.

Surf and Turf (asphalt) in Santa Cruz

Some pictures from my trip to Santa Cruz. The road riding there is really spectacular, much more steep up and down ( (15+% grades) with roads on the ridges connected by little dark and twisty connector roads that dive down into the redwoods. I was always waiting for a hobbit or some other creature to come out of these dark woods.

No ice cream on this road, but steep riding

Swanton organic strawberry farm, $3 pints on the honor system, yummers!

Treat stop on the coast highway

Local Santa Cruz surf spot, no beginners allowed. I stayed far away.

Typical road, steep and narrow

Banana slug, the UC-Santa Cruz mascot. This one is about 4" long.

Fwd: Four Mile - Logan Mill - Betasso MTB Ride Sunday

Hey all,

Here is the new deal.  Jeff and I are meeting at the Justice Center parking lot at 12:00 on Sunday.  We will ride up the canyon bike path to Four Mile Canyon to Logan Mill, up Logan Mill to Sugarloaf, down Sugarloaf to Betasso, and do 1-2 laps at Betasso.  Four Mile is paved, but Logan Mill is fire road dirt climbing, and Betasso is up and down.  Not sure what we will find for conditions at Betasso (if muddy we will skip it), and there may be a bit of route finding on Logan Mill, but I guarantee that it will all work out in some fashion.

Steve

afternoon (warm!) rides Sat and Sun

Looks like I can ride at 2 on Saturday from S. Boulder (or a bit later from elsewhere) and at or after noon on Sunday.  I'm open to suggestions for length/difficulty/route, but plan to ride MTB at least one of the days.  Let me know what you're up for.  I'll make a plan and post it tomorrow.  Jeff

Saturday Ride (3/29)

Saturday Ride (3/29) - Vics - Leave at 10:00
If it isn't too windy, I am going to do a lap of the Haystack Mtn TTT course and then maybe go up to Jamestown. If super windy, I'm going to avoid 36. No fun in wind...
Shooting for 3 hours with some longer hard efforts.

Stephen
Why do people have hour long meetings on speaker phones in cubical land?!? Ugh...

Saturday (3/29) Easy/Moderate Ride

I have to be back early on Saturday, so I am planning on doing a shorter, easier ride than the main group. Pace will be moderate, no hard efforts, probably about 1 1/2 hours, 2 hours max. I will be at Vic's at 9:45, leaving at 10:00.

If you have not been out much this year or just want to go shorter or slower, this would be a good ride to check out. The weather looks to be decent for Saturday, maybe a bit windy, but I will be there unless the weather gets bad. Raining or snowing, no ride for me.

Steve

Noon Ride for me...

Winter Weekend Rides - We are moving all rides to roll out at 10:00 at Vics unless otherwise notified. Weather Dependent. Send out emails on iffy days, if you plan to roll out.
Saturday more open, Sunday usually longer endurance rides. Bring a helmet and good winter tires, Gatorskins, Armadillos, etc, as we don't want to be spending a lot of time waiting on flats. Also, sometimes we may turn off on some dirt roads to break up the ride.

The 1st and 3rd Sundays Swift Cycling will do new rider/recruitment rides. Meet and Greet at 9:45, ride at 10:00.

New Racer/Rider Recruitment Rides - Dec. 2 & 16

Base/Aerobic Fitness rides between 2 to 4 hours.  Split into a few groups depending on current fitness level.  Work on Pacelines and Echelons. *I will be leading the slower 2 hour group, as I have been out of action for most of November.

The Farmers Almanac says it's going to be great weather riding (or planting winter wheat), so come on out and start getting ready for the 2008 biking season.
I will place a blurb in the Daily Camera and on the ACA Forum.  We will use this as a guide to doing some more Recruitment Rides through the winter.

Happy Thanksgiving!  I'll be thinking about biking as I'm on the beach in Mexico drinking a few Margaritas.  :-)

ride tomorrow - Sat. 11/17

Hi Folks-
I remember a while back there was a plan to have organized base rides
on the first and third Saturdays of the month.  Well, tomorrow is the
third Saturday of November.  I'll be there.  The only question is
time.  The earlier the better for me, but I have a little
flexibility.  I'd suggest 9:30 again.  Any objections?  Unless at
least two people reply and say "I'd rather do xx:xx time," then that's
when I will be there.  As for route, what's everyone think of out 75th
to the Box, back St. Vrain to 63rd?  I'm also starting to itch for
some dirt, but I can hold off a while if necessary.

Happy Friday-
Josh

Sat 9:30 AM ride

I'm thinking 2.5 hours at a conversational pace, maybe a Fruit Loop.
9:30 at Vic's...Jeff

Roadside cleanup: Who is this Sunday, the 4th or next Sunday, the 11th?

Thanks!

So, Andrea and I are going to delay the Skills Clinic a Week to Oct. 28 at 10:00.

  • A little bumping and rubbing - On grass at park
  • Cornering - Counter Steering, picking a line
  • ? - If you have questions let us know.

Thanks,
Stephen

Just a reminder - Stephen and Andrea will be doing a group riding clinic on Sunday, 10/21.  Meet at Vics on 30th at 9:00.

This is a ride that is open to everyone.  They will be teaching the basics of riding in a group - riding close to other riders, riding in pacelines and echelons, etc.  This will not be a training session, but a chance to learn the basics (and not so basics) of riding on the road in a group.

If you plan on showing up, please send me an e-mail so that I can get an idea of how many people we have.

"Farewell to Fall" Hill Climb next Saturday, September 29

"Farewell to Fall"; or, "Fall River Follies" -- Rocky Mountain National Park
Hello, Swift Riders:

Here's a plan for next Saturday --

Meet 7:00 AM, Vics, load bikes.  Drive to Fall River Entrance Station, RMNP, a few miles above Estes Park.

Ride up Old Fall River Road to Alpine Visitors Center, near summit of Trail Ridge Road.  Total climbing about 4,000', nine miles on hardpack dirt.  I've ridden this twice in last two months on my road bike with medium tires and rims -- no trouble at all.  Grade a little steep at times, say low-teens percent, but mixed with more mellow sections.  Scenery will be glorious!  Then, after snack at Visitors Center, a bit more climbing on Trail Ridge Road followed by big descent.

Cheers!

Fwd: Wednesday Dirt Hill Climb Ride, meet at Eben Fine Park at 5:30

Hey all,

I am going to do a little off-road climb on Wednesday afternoon.  My plan is to head up 4 Mile Canyon to Logan Mill Road and climb to the top.  This is a mixed-surface ride - 4 Mile Canyon is paved until the Logan Mill turnoff, and Logan Mill is a steeeeep fire road, with some close-to-needing-the-granny-gear sections, so it is probably not appropriate for road bikes, maybe possible on a cross bike with a triple.  I will be riding a mountain bike.  Total elevation is about 2200 vertical to the top from Eben Fine Park.  I will be going up and turning around, as there is not enough time to drop down to Betasso and do a lap before dark, and Betasso is closed on Wednesdays anyway.  For those desiring of more climbing, we can come back over Poor Man Road to Sunshine.

Pace will be moderate with numerous re-groups.  (I have ridden approximately 6 times in the last 12 weeks, and I am slow going up and scared coming down, so the pace will truly be reasonable.)  I will be leaving from the west end of Eben Fine Park at 5:30 on Wednesday.  Total climb time is probably about 1:15, figure another 45 minutes back down.  The weather is looking like typical rain in the afternoons, so if it is raining, I will not ride.  Otherwise, come on out for some climbing.
