Fwd: Swift Cycling Adopt A Road Cleanup THIS SATURDAY, 11/1, 10 AM

For Saturday, 11/1/2008
Hello Fellow Swifties,

It's that time again to go clean up our stretch of Nelson Road.  Let's meet at Vic's at 10 am and carpool from there.  Or meet us out there at 63rd and Nelson, if you are going separately.  We have had great turnout the last couple of times..let's do it again.  More hands makes it more fun and less work!  For those of you who have not done this before, come on out!  It's part of what makes Swift a unique club...community service.  Great way to get to know other riders that you may not have had a chance to really talk to before.  It takes one to two hours max.  The City requires us to have each watched their video on trash and safety.  Please do this before Saturday.  Go to http://www.bouldercounty.org/transportation/adopt_a_road.htm  and at the bottom of that page is a section called Links.  There are two videos you need to watch..one on safety and one on meth lab recognition.

I will be bringing waiver forms as required by the city for everyone to sign. Please RSVP so I can be sure to bring enough.

Thanks for all you do,

Jenny

Ronde de Bergs
1:30 pm
Meet at Cafe Sole

Might still be shorts and ss jersey weather!  Jeff

Saturday MTB ride - Walker Ranch/Super Walker

I am going to ride up to Walker Ranch on Saturday morning. My plan is to leave my house at about 7:30, be at the base of Flagstaff at about 7:45, and be at the Walker Ranch parking lot at about 9:00. I will ride out to the walking section and depending on my mental state (I hate walking down the stairs), I will will either continue on around or do an out and back to the parking lot, and then back home over Flagstaff. If I am feeling feisty, and I have the time, I might ride on over 68J up to Magnolia and back down that way - this would be the "Super Duper Walker Ranch" option.

Feel free to meet me at any of those points to ride if you would like.

Steve

Sunday, 10/19, Ride at 9:00 am

Sunday, 10/19, we will leave Vics (IRIS & 30th) at 9:00.  Doing a 'casual' pace to Lefthand Canyon to Ward.  Bring some warm gloves and jacket for decent back down...

If you want MTB today, Friday, give me a call at 303-868-4236.  Ken and I are heading out at 1:00...  Not sure where yet.

Saturday - Steve G is doing the Super Flag - Walker Ranch MTB ride.

Happy Trails,
Stephen

Friday MTB Ride

Ken and I are going to do Hall Ranch and maybe some of Picture Rock on Friday
Meet at Lyon's Visitor Center at 1:00 pm - I can carpool with somebody from Boulder if needed...
- Rest of the weekend looks good for movies and beer...
Stephen

Lyon's visitor center works fine.  I'll try to park on Railroad Street which is on the south side of the green that surrounds the visitor center.  The skate park on Railroad has some parking too.

 Ken

Re: Anyone riding this weekend?

I'm up for something simple...  Weather looks better for Saturday.

Fwd: GPS Magnolia Trails

Stephen,
Good ride today! Here's a picture of the ride, and a Google Earth KMZ file if you want to zoom in. My GPS reported about 2800 feet of climbing - way too much, I 'd say.

George

Saturday MTB Ride

Saturday - Taking 8:00 AM Bus up to Nederland.  (Unless I get a ride up :-)
Planning on riding West Mag and Dot Trails.  Lots-O-Fun ride.
Mindi - Good Luck at Leadville 100!

Sunday - I am helping with the Boulder Road Race.  If you like climbing, this is the race for you!  Pre-Reg at http://dbcevents.com/

Stephen
*Anybody know how to record Internet Streaming?  Olyimpic RR is on from 9:00 pm to 3:30 am Friday Night/Saturday Morning.  Women's Midnight to 3:30 Sunday 'morning'...    It will be chopped up, dramatic story added and editted and show during the day on NBC.

Junior National TT - Michael 4th - 1.5 seconds back...

...after 21 minutes is what separated the top four placings in the Junior Men 13-14 Time Trial yesterday.  Michael was fourth among them, for a podium placing!  His teammate Dean got 7th, only 22 seconds back.

In hindsight he of course was bemoaning the numerous places where he could have picked up a fraction of a second, but that's racing.  At least he knows he's among the strongest, and is looking to come out fighting for the crit today.  This is likely to come down to a sprint - usually a strength for Michael, though the size of the top two guys on yesterday's podium is somewhat scary and who knows how good their sprints may be.

Cheers,
Dan

Thursday Evening HC Ride

Thursday - 5:45 meet up at Ebine G Fine Park - (As long as the storms miss us)
Bike path* to 4 Mile Canyon - to dirt or early turn around then over Poormans* to Sunshine.
*Some uphill dirt section.
Pace as hard as you want or can go.  I'm not going ballistic...

Stephen

MTB ride - Tuesday night - laps at Betasso

I will be doing a MTB ride tomorrow evening (Tuesday). I will be at Eben G. Fine Park at 5:30, and will head up the Boulder Canyon Link trail and do 1-2 laps at Betasso Preserve. Pace and distance will be determined by the group (if there is a group), but I will probably be on a single speed, so pace will pretty mellow.

Steve

Fwd: saturday rides (REVISED!)

Ok. Looks like there are a couple of options:

Josh talked me into doing rondes des bergs. 8:00 but meet at Cafe

Mindi is still doing the old stage / lee hill ride because of time

State Highway 170 to gain shoulders

The Boulder County Transportation Department will begin a project this spring to add shoulders to State Highway 170. Boulder County is working cooperatively with CDOT to complete this 3.5-mile stretch of highway between State Highway 93 and Superior. The final product will look similar to Cherryvale Road, which was completed a few years ago. The purpose is to provide a safer area for bicycles to ride on the road adjacent to automobiles.

Originally identified as a priority in the Transportation Sales Tax passed in 2001, the project is estimated to cost $2.3 million when completed. The first phase of the project was completed in 2007, when the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) paved the surface of the road for winter wear. The final phase of the project will add another layer of asphalt after the shoulders have been constructed.

SH 170 is a scenic road that runs along the old mining community of Marshall and allows views of historic railroad grades and open space trails. It is popular with commuter and recreational bicyclists alike.

Fwd: Saturday ride

Hi all - I plan to leave Vic's at 9 for 2-3 hours.  Maybe Ward if I feel up to it, maybe not.  Jeff

Swift donates used water bottles to YMCA

A very happy YMCA youth program director poses with bags and boxes of clean, used water bottles left over from the Hugo Road Race, which took place May 31, 2008. Six to seven hundred bottles have been re-used from both Deer Trail and Hugo this year. All part of making Swift an environmentally friendly bike club. We also buy carbon credits to offset the greenhouse gases emitted by offering our bike races, and do Adopt-a-Road cleanup of Nelson Road between 51st and 63rd.

Hill Climb ride - Thursday, 5:30, Vics 30th

Vics 30th, 5:30, Thursday, climbing ride - Lee Hill to Deer Trail and return

I am going to ride Lee Hill to the top, and continue on up the Deer Trail road to the end of the pavement.  Lee Hill is moderate, but Deer Trail appears to be a bit steeper.  I have never ridden Deer Trail, so it might be a bit of an adventure.  We can re-group at the top of the Lee Hill climbs and at the top of Deer Trail.  Return will be retracing Lee Hill back home.

Steve

Great trip up to Estes Park! Jenny drove the 3 cylinder sag wagon filled to the brim. Mindi got the prize for most stuff, David Coombs for ...nothing..except the Swift Cycling Cake! The crew was pretty exhausted from the ride up to Estes and then had to crawl up a loooong, steeeeep hill to the cabin. I think Jeff's face says it all. Had a delicious spaghetti dinner on Friday night (sauce made in a pressure cooker...it was so good). French toast for breakfast....Jenny did a solo ride in the park while the others did their killer ride down to Lyons and back. Lots of kids showed up on Sunday to close out a great weekend. Let's do it again soon!

Tuesday HC - Top of Flagstaff Mountain

Hard charging assault on Super Flagstaff

Al, Stephen, Jenny, and I made the assault on Flagstaff last night. After a warm-up tour of the well-heeled neighborhoods of upper Chautauqua, the climb started in earnest. Jenny kept a reasonable pace, while the rest of us took off like mountain goats on amphetamines, with heart rates near unsustainable levels. In a wise move, Al, with two weekend rides under his belt, turned around at the amphitheater road, while the two Stephen's soldiered on. We made it to the top under gray and threatening skies, with Stephen digging deep after two (2!) time trials on Sunday and a commute to work on Tuesday. Someplace on the interwebs, there is a camera picture of Stephen H. at the top, taken while muttering that "...I won't be up here again for awhile..."

Nice temps, great views of the Indian Peaks still deep in snow (if you could bear to take in the vistas under the heavy suffering imposed by the upper Flagstaff sections) and a welcome change from the summer Flagstaff ride heat where the asphalt is melting and one is drenched with sweat. I am thinking that a Super Walker ride is in order soon - get out your knobbies...

Steve

It's not all about riding...just mostly.

Out celebrating Stephen's 39th birthday at The Med on May 2, 2008!

Surf and Turf (asphalt) in Santa Cruz

Some pictures from my trip to Santa Cruz. The road riding there is really spectacular, much more steep up and down ( (15+% grades) with roads on the ridges connected by little dark and twisty connector roads that dive down into the redwoods. I was always waiting for a hobbit or some other creature to come out of these dark woods.

No ice cream on this road, but steep riding

Swanton organic strawberry farm, $3 pints on the honor system, yummers!

Treat stop on the coast highway

Local Santa Cruz surf spot, no beginners allowed. I stayed far away.

Typical road, steep and narrow

Banana slug, the UC-Santa Cruz mascot. This one is about 4" long.

Fwd: Four Mile - Logan Mill - Betasso MTB Ride Sunday

Hey all,

Here is the new deal.  Jeff and I are meeting at the Justice Center parking lot at 12:00 on Sunday.  We will ride up the canyon bike path to Four Mile Canyon to Logan Mill, up Logan Mill to Sugarloaf, down Sugarloaf to Betasso, and do 1-2 laps at Betasso.  Four Mile is paved, but Logan Mill is fire road dirt climbing, and Betasso is up and down.  Not sure what we will find for conditions at Betasso (if muddy we will skip it), and there may be a bit of route finding on Logan Mill, but I guarantee that it will all work out in some fashion.

Steve

afternoon (warm!) rides Sat and Sun

Looks like I can ride at 2 on Saturday from S. Boulder (or a bit later from elsewhere) and at or after noon on Sunday.  I'm open to suggestions for length/difficulty/route, but plan to ride MTB at least one of the days.  Let me know what you're up for.  I'll make a plan and post it tomorrow.  Jeff

Saturday Ride (3/29)

Saturday Ride (3/29) - Vics - Leave at 10:00
If it isn't too windy, I am going to do a lap of the Haystack Mtn TTT course and then maybe go up to Jamestown. If super windy, I'm going to avoid 36. No fun in wind...
Shooting for 3 hours with some longer hard efforts.

Stephen
Why do people have hour long meetings on speaker phones in cubical land?!? Ugh...

Saturday (3/29) Easy/Moderate Ride

I have to be back early on Saturday, so I am planning on doing a shorter, easier ride than the main group. Pace will be moderate, no hard efforts, probably about 1 1/2 hours, 2 hours max. I will be at Vic's at 9:45, leaving at 10:00.

If you have not been out much this year or just want to go shorter or slower, this would be a good ride to check out. The weather looks to be decent for Saturday, maybe a bit windy, but I will be there unless the weather gets bad. Raining or snowing, no ride for me.

Steve

Noon Ride for me...

I'm delaying my ride till Noon - Still planning on doing 2 or so hours.  A bit to cold and damp out for me right now...
