Winter Weekend Rides

Winter Weekend Rides - We are moving all rides to roll out at 10:00 at Vics unless otherwise notified. Weather Dependent. Send out emails on iffy days, if you plan to roll out.
Saturday more open, Sunday usually longer endurance rides. Bring a helmet and good winter tires, Gatorskins, Armadillos, etc, as we don't want to be spending a lot of time waiting on flats. Also, sometimes we may turn off on some dirt roads to break up the ride.

The 1st and 3rd Sundays Swift Cycling will do new rider/recruitment rides. Meet and Greet at 9:45, ride at 10:00.

New Racer/Rider Recruitment Rides - Dec. 2 & 16

Hey All,
We will host two New Racer/Rider Recruitment Rides on December 2 & 16.  1st and 3rd Sundays.
Vics - 9:45 Meet and Greet - 10:00 Ride
Base/Aerobic Fitness rides between 2 to 4 hours.  Split into a few groups depending on current fitness level.  Work on Pacelines and Echelons. *I will be leading the slower 2 hour group, as I have been out of action for most of November.

The Farmers Almanac says it's going to be great weather riding (or planting winter wheat), so come on out and start getting ready for the 2008 biking season.
I will place a blurb in the Daily Camera and on the ACA Forum.  We will use this as a guide to doing some more Recruitment Rides through the winter.

Happy Thanksgiving!  I'll be thinking about biking as I'm on the beach in Mexico drinking a few Margaritas.  :-)

ride tomorrow - Sat. 11/17

Hi Folks-
I remember a while back there was a plan to have organized base rides
on the first and third Saturdays of the month.  Well, tomorrow is the
third Saturday of November.  I'll be there.  The only question is
time.  The earlier the better for me, but I have a little
flexibility.  I'd suggest 9:30 again.  Any objections?  Unless at
least two people reply and say "I'd rather do xx:xx time," then that's
when I will be there.  As for route, what's everyone think of out 75th
to the Box, back St. Vrain to 63rd?  I'm also starting to itch for
some dirt, but I can hold off a while if necessary.

Happy Friday-
Josh

Sat 9:30 AM ride

I'm thinking 2.5 hours at a conversational pace, maybe a Fruit Loop.
9:30 at Vic's...Jeff

Hi,

I can do the cleanup either this Sunday, the 4th, or next Sunday, the 11th?  We can do it in the morning or afternoon, whichever works for the most people.  We need at least 6 people....

Please let me know your availability so we can have fun together picking up trash!  ;  )

Thanks!

  • Cornering - Counter Steering, picking a line
  • ? - If you have questions let us know.

Thanks,

This is a ride that is open to everyone.  They will be teaching the basics of riding in a group - riding close to other riders, riding in pacelines and echelons, etc.  This will not be a training session, but a chance to learn the basics (and not so basics) of riding on the road in a group.

If you plan on showing up, please send me an e-mail so that I can get an idea of how many people we have.

"Farewell to Fall" Hill Climb next Saturday, September 29

"Farewell to Fall"; or, "Fall River Follies" -- Rocky Mountain National Park
Hello, Swift Riders:

Here's a plan for next Saturday --

Meet 7:00 AM, Vics, load bikes.  Drive to Fall River Entrance Station, RMNP, a few miles above Estes Park.

Ride up Old Fall River Road to Alpine Visitors Center, near summit of Trail Ridge Road.  Total climbing about 4,000', nine miles on hardpack dirt.  I've ridden this twice in last two months on my road bike with medium tires and rims -- no trouble at all.  Grade a little steep at times, say low-teens percent, but mixed with more mellow sections.  Scenery will be glorious!  Then, after snack at Visitors Center, a bit more climbing on Trail Ridge Road followed by big descent.

Cheers!

Fwd: Wednesday Dirt Hill Climb Ride, meet at Eben Fine Park at 5:30

Hey all,

I am going to do a little off-road climb on Wednesday afternoon.  My plan is to head up 4 Mile Canyon to Logan Mill Road and climb to the top.  This is a mixed-surface ride - 4 Mile Canyon is paved until the Logan Mill turnoff, and Logan Mill is a steeeeep fire road, with some close-to-needing-the-granny-gear sections, so it is probably not appropriate for road bikes, maybe possible on a cross bike with a triple.  I will be riding a mountain bike.  Total elevation is about 2200 vertical to the top from Eben Fine Park.  I will be going up and turning around, as there is not enough time to drop down to Betasso and do a lap before dark, and Betasso is closed on Wednesdays anyway.  For those desiring of more climbing, we can come back over Poor Man Road to Sunshine.

Pace will be moderate with numerous re-groups.  (I have ridden approximately 6 times in the last 12 weeks, and I am slow going up and scared coming down, so the pace will truly be reasonable.)  I will be leaving from the west end of Eben Fine Park at 5:30 on Wednesday.  Total climb time is probably about 1:15, figure another 45 minutes back down.  The weather is looking like typical rain in the afternoons, so if it is raining, I will not ride.  Otherwise, come on out for some climbing.

Wednesday night ride takes no prisoners!

Swiftie Steve Gabbard wonders what he's getting himself into as the Wed night ride heads out into the sleety rain. Former Swifties Rose Alford and Sean Steeves join in as well and the weather clears up just in time to rip it up on swoopy singletrack, pop over slimy logs and ford raging creeks en route to Illegal Pete's for tasty smothered burritos. Hurts so good!

Thusday Ride - 5:45 - Up to Jamestown...

Thurs ride will be up to Jamestown. The route will by 36, Left Hand and back via Old Stage. We will regroup in Jamestown.
We will leave Vic's at 5:45. I have pushed back the start time with the idea it will allow more people to get out and ride.

See you on Thurs.
Jay

Trails are drying out...

I rode up to Sunset and north on Switzerland Trail on Sunday. Switzerland Trail north of Sunset is wet in places, but clear of snow. Looking south, Switzerland Trail towards Sugarloaf still has some drifts on it.

Still many weeks until the trails at East Magnolia are dry, and Walker and closer trail may be okay now, but probably wet.

Epic ride report

The first epic road ride of the season had a good turnout yesterday. We started with ~12 riders, took a break in Lyons, and then attacked the South St. Vrain climb. The group kept a moderate pace up the climb, which seems to go on forever, and regrouped at the beautiful Raymond store. Most of the group turned back here, as warm weather in Lyons turned into windy and cold weather on Peak to Peak. It is still late winter on Peak to Peak highway, with snow drifts in the trees. Jay, George and I were running late, so pushed the pace a bit to Ward, where we stopped at the general store for a sufficient amount of time in the intermittent snowflakes to get completely chilled off before the long and cold descent down Left Hand Canyon, over Lee Hill Road, and back into sunny and warm Boulder.

One highlight was getting to see Sean Steeves, ex-Swift member, at the Ward general store, complaining vociferously about the climb to Ward.

Sunday Ride - up into the mountains

Several people will be riding the following route:
St Vrain to Peak to Peak. The return will be either via Jamestown or Ward. Great training for Iron Horse.
This is a great climbing ride, never too steep, and folks can sort themselves out on the climb and re-group at the turn-off to Raymond or at the gourmet Raymond store.
Ride will meet at Vic's on 30th at 10:00.

We are riding again!!!

New Clothing is IN!
Weekend Rides are going again. Hopefully Mother Nature will continue to be nice to us. We did 3 to 4 hours of pretty easy intensity both days this last weekend. A few had "family" commitments and cut back early...
Starting in March we will pick up the pace on the Saturday rides depending on weather and who is out. Almost everybody is a bit behind in base so we are focussing on that for now.

Us riding with old clothing below...
Jeff - Jay - Stephen

Dave - Chaz&Dave - The Gang..

Jay & Jeff - Bikes at Coot Lake - Dan & Micheal getting ready to hammer us on the Tandem!

Women's Ride - Saturday - Feb. 17

Shall we venture onto the roads for our January ride, in February? Sure, let's give it a try. I propose we do a ride similar to what we did in December, with a stop at The Eye Opener coffee shop near the end of the ride. Those of you who want to go for a longer ride, or don't want to stop, can continue on your way. I enjoyed the socializing very much, and since I'm leading the ride ; ) , that's the plan.

I think everyone felt comfortable with the pace in December, and we'll keep it similar to that. Besides, none of us have been on our bikes for at least 7 weeks!

Look forward to seeing you at Vic's, next Saturday, at 10 a.m.

Men who have wives who are not on the email lists, please pass on this info to them!
Men are cordially invited to join this ride, but the pace will be set by the women.

Jenny

Moab Weekend
Looks like the weekend of March 23-25 is winning...
Hope to have a mix of Road and Mountain Bike rides.
Girlfriend/Boyfriends are welcome to come on out. Plenty to do. In early March, I will get confirmation and look at housing.

Moab March Madness

Ok. I'm starting to nail down the weekend.
From feedback on the rides this weekend, it sounds like either
March 23-25 or
March 30-April 1.

If you are interested in going let me know what works best or if both work. I'm open for either. Hope to get a good mix of Roadies, slow and fast and Mountain Bikers, sane and crazy.

ACA Officials Clinic

Plus you could easily bump up the placing of every Swify rider a couple spots! ;)http://www.americancycling.org/info/news/announcements/officials-clinic.pdf

Swift TT Report

Hi folks-
There indeed was a TT yesterday, and I'll give you a quick report.

With the weather being a big pile of dog doo lately, I was a little obsessive in checking the forecast. Even on Saturday, weather.com said that the temps should be close to 40 on Sunday morning. So I get up all hung over on Sunday morning, check the weather online, and it says 37 degrees. Score. I get myself all dolled up for the ride to Boulder and realize by the time I get about a mile down that I needed thicker tights. Descending S. Boulder Rd. my beard developed icicles and my extremities started going numb, but the view of the fog in the valley was pretty cool. I was encouraged: the roads were nice and dry and it was only going to get warmer. Once I got into Boulder, I noticed that the fog, while pretty, was not what I wanted to see. It was freaking cold. When I got to Vics, David Chrislip was there waiting in his nice warm car. He told me the radio said it was about 37, but his car was reading 24. That's a big difference. After a little putzing, we were off. The fog was thick and cold, and the roads were super crappy. After lots of conversation about the best way to ride on ice, we got to the start at 75th and St. Vrain (eastbound). David was to go first, and just before starting he said "If I don't warm up A LOT, I'm turning for home at 63d." Couldn't blame him. Since I was behind him, I could see that he did indeed warm up as we were heading up Nelson. As for the TT itself, David got faster as the miles ticked by, and I got slower. At the finish line (6914 sign on the right), Ken met us with some high quality hot chocolate and nice conversation. He confirmed for us that it was really 23 degrees. Did I say it was cold? Well, if I'm redundant, that's because it was cold. The ride home down 75th, 52, 79th, Lookout, and 75th was way hillier than I wanted. David pulled me to Jay. Hopefully he got home in better shape than my bonked self.
In case you want to do the TT on your own and want a time to shoot for, David completed the ~14 miles in 40:38 (DC, I hope it's OK I put your time in here). I was about 1:20 slower, but I had a little trouble with manual dexterity so the time's approximate.

I'd suggest we try again next weekend, but I need some time to forget
what it's like to do a time trial. Four weeks should do it.

I hope you all are enjoying the sun-
Josh

Weekend Rides - 10:00 AM

Saturday & Sunday 10:00 AM at Vics (30th & IRIS)
If the weather is O.K., somebody will be out. If it is snowing or below freezing, then we will probably be skiing. Hopefully soon we will kick off the bike season in Colorado.
